Why Children Need Grandparents

Grandparents are very important in children’s lives. Because people are living longer, more people have grandparents now, and studies are showing all the good that involved, caring, open-minded grandparents offer their children and grandchildren.

Grandparents are good for grandkids if they understand their place and don’t try to replace the parents or spoil the kids in the wrong way.

Grandparents Have Influence

Most adult children who were lucky enough to have grandparents involved in their lives appreciate it, and are thankful they had that opportunity. They often quote the things their grandparents taught them and instilled in them. It’s not unusual hearing adults say that their most admired person in their life is a grandparent.

The amazing thing is that without being pushy, grandparents are very much responsible for instilling values into their grandkids. This is true even when parents do things a little differently.

Grandparents Reduce Parental Stress

Grandparents who work hard to allow their kids to be the type of parents they want to be, offering support only when needed and asked, tend to reduce parental stress a lot. Most parents get stressed, but if you have a parent you can go to when you need it, without judgment, it makes life a lot easier. Even if a grandparent can only offer a listening ear instead of money, that’s enough to reduce stress.

Grandparents Are Great Teachers

Due to the long life full of experiences a grandparent has lived, they make great teachers. As people age, they tend to get more patient with kids than they were when they were young, and can explain concepts better because of it. If you’re lucky enough to have a parent in your life who understands new math, you’ve got it made.

Grandparents Make Kids Feel Secure

Children often worry about losing their own parents but since they know the grandparents were their parent’s parents, they feel safer just knowing they are there. And often kids think their parents know everything (depending upon the age), so obviously the grandparents know even more. This helps children feel secure.

Grandparents Offer Affordable Childcare Options

In some cases, a grandparent is a wonderfully affordable childcare option. This is something that must be considered on a case-by-case basis, though. Even if grandma or grandpa doesn’t want to be a babysitter, they can offer help financially so that their child can do more with the limited time they have. If you’re a grandparent who lives close and wants to be more involved, let your child know because often they won’t ask.

Children need grandparents very much. If you’re a grandparent, understand that your role may be different than you thought it would be, but if you keep an open mind and open heart it will be amazing and wonderful.

Vitamin D and Cancer Prevention

Hi there!

Today we’ll talk about vitamin D and cancer prevention.

You probably know about vitamin D’s link with bone
density and strength.

Lately, though, scientists have been seeing a link with
vitamin D deficiency and certain types of cancer. They
suggest that this deficiency may account for several
thousand early deaths from colon, breast, ovarian, and
prostate cancer every year.

This discovery makes it even more important to ensure
that everyone has an adequate vitamin D intake.

Most studies have reported that vitamin D has a
beneficial effect on the risk of colon, breast, prostate,
and ovarian cancer.

One PubMed search from 2004 produced 63 different studies
(30 for colon cancer, 13 for breast cancer, 26 for prostate
cancer, and 7 for ovarian cancer).

Of the 30 colon cancer studies, 20 found a statistically
significant benefit for vitamin D on the cancer risk or
mortality.

Of the breast cancer studies, 9 reported a favorable link
between vitamin D markers (or sunlight) with cancer risk.

13 of the 26 prostate cancer studies found “a statistically
significant favorable association.” Six of seven
pre-diagnostic serum studies of colon cancer or adenomas
found a significantly higher risk in those with low
vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels.

“Vitamin D metabolism and serum levels are inversely
correlated with latitude and positively correlated with
sunlight.”

This means the higher the latitude, the lower the
vitamin D levels, and the more sunlight, the more vitamin
D.

This corresponds to a higher incidence or mortality rate
for colon and breast cancer in places that are 37 degrees
or greater from the equator.

There are similar north-south gradients for ovarian
and prostate cancer figures.

Normal colon, breast, and prostate epithelial cells have
a receptor for the active vitamin D metabolite that is very
sensitive.

This active metabolite is actually synthesized in colon,
prostate, breast, and other tissues. This provides a
possible explanation for the lower incidence rates of
colon cancer and adenomas in patients with higher vitamin
D levels.

Death rates for colon, prostate, and breast cancer
tend to be higher in areas with lower levels of
winter sunlight, and lower in sunny areas.

Patients with vitamin D levels below 30 ng/ml show
approximately twice the risk of colon cancer than
those with higher levels of vitamin D.

Women with the lowest serum levels of vitamin D
had a risk of breast cancer that was five times
greater than women with high levels.

In one study of 19,000 men, those with vitamin D
blood levels lower than 16 ng/ml had a 70% higher
incidence rate for prostate cancer than men with
levels above 16 ng/ml.

What May be Undermining Your Vitamin D - Health Tips

 Hi again!

Today, we’ll look at a few more things that might be
impacting your vitamin D levels.

1. Having cooler skin.

Yes, your temperature actually affects vitamin D
production.

Warm skin is more efficient at making vitamin D than
cooler skin is, so you make more vitamin D on a hot
day than on a cool one.

If it’s cooler outside, you’ll need to stay in the sun
longer to make the same amount of vitamin D that you’d
make in only a few minutes on a hot summer day.

2. Eating too much.

Fat cells actually absorb vitamin D.

It’s thought this might be a way for the body to store
vitamin D “for a rainy day” in case production or intake
of the vitamin is low.

However, studies have shown that being obese (a body
mass index of over 30) is actually correlated with l
ower vitamin D levels.

So being overweight may reduce the bioavailability
of your vitamin D.

3. Being older.

Older people have less of the
substance found in your skin that is converted by
UVB light into the vitamin D precursor than younger
people do.

This means they make less vitamin D naturally.

There’s also experimental evidence that says older
people are also less efficient at making vitamin D
than younger people.

The National Center for Health Statistics hasn’t
seen a huge drop in vitamin D levels between middle-aged
and older people, however.

This may be because many older people now take supplements,
or it could be that the effects of aging are less than
previously supposed.

4. Having an unhealthy gut.

The vitamin D you consume,
either in your food or as a supplement, is absorbed by
your small intestine immediately below the stomach.

This absorption is affected by several things: stomach
juice, pancreatic secretions, bile from your liver,
and even the integrity of your intestinal wall.

This means that any disorder that might affect the
gut, like Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, chronic
pancreatitis, or cystic fibrosis, can reduce the
amount of vitamin D your body absorbs.

5. Having unhealthy liver and kidneys.

If your liver isn’t producing enough bile, it may
lower the amount of vitamin D your intestines absorb.

Other types of liver disease can reduce the metabolism
of vitamin D or stop it entirely.

Vitamin D levels and kidney function tend to go hand
in hand. With normal kidneys, you have normal vitamin
D levels (usually), but as the kidneys fail, the
vitamin D levels go down.

Are You Undermining Your Vitamin D? - Health Tips

Today, we’ll talk about some things you may be
doing that might actually be undermining your vitamin D
levels.

It’s not easy to get enough vitamin D in your food.

It’s found in fatty fish, fish liver oil, beef liver,
and egg yolks, along with some fortified foods like
milk products and cereals.

Your skin makes vitamin D in the presence of sunlight,
so you might be able to make adequate amounts by
getting enough fresh air and sunshine.

Your liver and kidneys also help in this process.

Here are some surprising things that might be
undermining your vitamin D levels:

Living at higher latitudes:

Vitamin D is produced by UVB light from the sun.

At higher latitudes on the planet, the amount of this
useful light goes down during the winter because of the
low angle of the sun’s rays.

For example, in Boston, Massachusetts, little (if any)
useful vitamin D is made in people’s skin from November
through February. Short days and thick clothing that
covers your arms and legs also limit UVB exposure and
vitamin D levels.

Living in an area with air pollution:

Burning fossil fuels, wood, and other materials creates
carbon particulates that hang in the air and scatter
and absorb valuable UVB rays.

Ozone also absorbs UVB, oddly enough, so holes in
the ozone layer might be one effect of pollution
that enhances your vitamin D levels.

Using a lot of sunscreen (theoretically):

Sunscreen does its job of preventing sunburn by
blocking the UVB light that burns your skin.

Therefore, theoretically, using sunscreen might
hinder vitamin D production in your skin.

However, practically speaking, few people use
sunscreen properly. They either don’t apply
enough, or they apply it too irregularly to work right.

Therefore, it doesn’t totally block the UVB light
and its effects on your vitamin D levels might be
negligible.

One Australian study showed no difference in
vitamin D between adults who were randomly
assigned either a sunscreen or a placebo cream
one summer.

Having dark-skinned ancestors:

The substance in your skin that makes it darker
in color is called melanin.

Melanin competes with the substance in your skin
that starts up the vitamin D production line.

Both use UVB light, so if you have a lot of
melanin in your skin, you’ll probably need more
UVB light in order to make the same amount of
vitamin D that a lighter-skinned person would need.

More Dynamic Nutritional Duos Examples - Health Tips

Hi there,

Today we’ll talk about two more examples, but
there are many, many more if you care to do the
research.

Zinc and Copper.

When you think of copper, you probably think of
pennies or wire – or maybe your favorite cooking pan.

However, it’s actually an essential nutrient. Zinc
may be a little more familiar to you, since some
people swear by its effectiveness in shortening
the length of a cold (scientific evidence is mixed
on that one).

Neither of these minerals is rare in your food, so
you really don’t have to worry about deficiency
except in a couple of examples.

Copper and zinc compete for absorption sites in
your intestine, and if there’s a lot of zinc
around, copper tends to lose out.

This can create a copper deficiency. In severe
cases, this can lead to anemia, bone defects,
and a higher risk of infection.

You can get too much zinc from a surprising source,
too: denture cream!

A 2008 report described four cases of denture
wearers with neurologic abnormalities caused by
copper deficiency. This was traced to using massive
amounts of denture cream, which contains zinc.

Daily zinc goals for adults are around 11 mg for
men and 8 mg for women. Adults should get about
900 micrograms (mcg) of copper daily.

Those are tiny amounts, so you should be able
to get everything you need from eating a properly
balanced diet.

Niacin and Tryptophan.

Niacin is one of the B vitamins (B3), although
you rarely hear it called that.

Nowadays, it’s probably best known for its
cholesterol-lowering effects.

Large doses (500 mg to 1,500 mg daily) can
lower “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and increase
“good” cholesterol (HDL).

These doses are way more than you need for
nutritional purposes.

Daily recommended niacin amounts for that are
16 mg for men and 14 mg for women. Tryptophan
is one of the nine essential amino acids your
body needs to create proteins.

It’s one you need to consume because your body
doesn’t create tryptophan. It’s main role is a
supplier of niacin, due to complicated metabolism
processes.

This means one way to get enough niacin is to eat
foods rich in tryptophan, like chicken or turkey.

The disease pellagra, now thought to be caused by
niacin deficiency, used to be believed to be caused b
y tryptophan deficiency.

The disease causes a bad rash, diarrhea, and dementia,
and was common in the American South during the
early 20th Century.

Researchers eventually tracked it back to a niacin
deficiency from a corn-based diet. Isn’t that a great story?

Dynamic Duos in Nutrition - 5 Examples - Health Tips

 Hi there!

Most nutrients don’t work alone. They interact,
join forces, cancel each other out, or fight for
position on your body’s metabolic pathways.

This is one reason a balanced diet is preferred over
supplements: foods contain the right mixtures of nutrients
needed by your body, while some supplements, as we’ve
learned, aren’t a good mixed together.

We’ll look at only five examples. There are many,
many more.

1. Vitamin D and Calcium. Like most nutrients, calcium
is absorbed in your small intestine.

If there is a large amount of calcium in your gut, it
can move across the intestinal lining on its own.

But in smaller quantities, it gets some help from
vitamin D.

Vitamin D also helps with phosphorus absorption, also
needed for bone health
. Today’s official nutrient guidelines
recommend that adults get 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium
daily, along with 400 International Units (IU).

When you hit 50, you need to increase the calcium to
1,200 mg daily, and once you’re past 70, up the vitamin
D to 600 IU.

2. Sodium and Potassium. Around 90% of the sodium you
get is in the form of common table salt – sodium chloride.

Both sodium and chloride are needed minerals, but the
average American consumes nearly 1,000 mg more sodium than
they need.

That excess sodium causes the arteries to lose their
ability to expand and contract, along with creating an
excess of water in the body.

So too much sodium leads to high blood pressure and
heart problems.

Taking potassium, though, can counteract some of those
effects. Potassium encourages the kidneys to get rid of
sodium.

Many studies have shown a link between high potassium
levels and lower blood pressure. Current guidelines
recommend keeping a 4:1 or 3:1 ration of potassium to
sodium.

This works out to your getting around 4,700 mg of
potassium daily, and only 1,200 to 1,500 mg of sodium.

Most Americans get about half the amount of potassium
and at least twice as much sodium as they need.

3. Vitamin B12 and Folate. B12 and folate (another
B vitamin) work together to support cell division
and replication.

They also work together to metabolize homocysteine.

And folate depends on B12 to be absorbed, stored,
and metabolized by the body.

You can easily get B12 from meat, eggs, milk, and
other animal foods – or from a monthly injection
or daily pill.

Folate is found in leafy green veggies, beans,
and legumes – or with folic acid pills.

In fact, folate in tablet form is even better
absorbed than that from food.

Five Supplement Combinations to Avoid

 Hi There!

Vitamin D
increases the absorption of some nutrients like
calcium and iron
.

However, there are other combinations that don’t
work as well that you want to steer clear of:

1.Multivitamins.

Let’s start by acknowledging “the elephant in the room.”

Many people take multivitamins without harm, and, in fact,
many doctors recommend them. If some nutrients can interact
with each other negatively, why would they be combined
in a single product in the first place?

Well, most multivitamins are formulated to counteract
any of these negative interactions, so you’re mostly safe.

The problem is, you might be getting too much or too
little of a needed vitamin. For example, magnesium can
increase vitamin D levels – but vitamin A can decrease
them.

Many multivitamins have more vitamin D than vitamin
A for this reason.

But what if your doctor says you need more vitamin A?

On the other hand, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K)
build up in your bodies and can cause toxic effects if
you get too much of them.

Does your multivitamin have too much for your body?

A third problem with a multivitamin is that they don’t
contain macronutrients like calcium and magnesium.

These are called macronutrients because our bodies need
large amounts of them daily.

However, large amounts can interfere with absorption of
some other needed vitamins.

Basically, you might be better off skipping the
multivitamin in favor of a balanced diet and a couple
of supplements that your doctor has suggested.

2.Calcium and Magnesium.

Calcium and magnesium “work hand in hand” for bone
health and some other bodily functions.

Calcium also needs magnesium to be properly absorbed.

Magnesium also helps calcium to be deposited into your
bone tissue.

You’d think these two should be taken together, right?

In fact, large amounts of these nutrients can inhibit
absorption of both, so doctors recommend taking them
at least two hours apart.

3. Copper and Zinc.

Both zinc and copper are needed for optimal immune
health and healing. They work closely together for
wound elasticity and resistance.

However, zinc can interfere with copper absorption
and high blood levels of zinc (equal or greater
than 50 mg/d) can actually cause copper deficiency.

This deficiency (although rare) can lead to anemia,
hypopigmentation, connective tissue disorders, bone
defects, abnormal lipid metabolism, ataxia, and a
higher risk of infection.

4. Fish Oil and Gingko Biloba. Omega-3 fish oil
supplements have been shown to offer heart-healthy
benefits, help with weight loss and fat reduction,
help prevent vision loss and neurocognitive injuries.

Gingko biloba supplements have been used to treat
cognitive impairment. However, they have something in
common: they’re both blood thinners.

Taking these together increases your risk of
uncontrolled bleeding,

5. Iron and Green Tea.

Iron is another immune system helper. It helps with
oxygen transport, hemoglobin manufacture, and the
breakdown of free radicals (among other things).

However, mixing it with some beverages can have a
negative effect.

A glass of orange juice can actually help your body
absorb iron (thanks to the vitamin C) – but a glass
of milk does the opposite (thanks to the calcium).

Green tea is another big antagonist of iron. Consuming
large amounts of green tea has actually been linked
with iron-deficiency anemia.

Vitamin D and Essential Nutrients - Health Tips

Hi there!

Nearly two-thirds of the northern population are
considered deficient in vitamin D.

Throughout much of the world, vitamin D levels are
inadequate. There are many studies showing that
getting the proper amount of vitamin D helps to
prevent some diseases, as well as helping in other
areas of the body.

The problem with vitamin D, however, is that it
is fat-soluble.

This means it is possible to consume toxic amounts
of the vitamin.

Today we’ll look both at the ways vitamin D helps
your body absorb certain nutrients, as well as
how excessive amounts can do more harm than good.

Vitamin D has been shown to act on the regulation
of over 2700 different genes by acting on elements
that respond to the hormone we call a vitamin.

One recent article suggests that vitamin D
(as 25(OH)D) levels above 30 nmol/L are associated
with significantly lower all-cause mortality levels
as compared with blood levels under 30 nmol/L.

Blood levels over 78 nmol/L are associated with
bone health and maintaining the proper levels of
parathyroid hormone.

Cancer prevention may be promoted when levels
reach 90 nmol/L and at 100 nmol/L, your body can
successfully resist infections like tuberculosis
and influenza.

Blood vitamin D levels at or above 120 nmol/L
are associated with the lowest mortality rates.

However, blood levels over 150 nmol/L have been
shown to be linked with increased mortality,
so there is a fairly narrow U-shaped curve where
vitamin D levels are most beneficial.

Adequate vitamin D levels (as 25(OH)D) are
associated with increased absorption of some
vital nutrients.

These include calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphate,
zinc, and copper.

Calcium is vitally needed by your skeletal system,
so increased absorption of this mineral is essential
for good bone health.

Magnesium is useful for muscle function and iron
for blood cells and oxygen transport.

However, excessive 25(OH)D levels in the blood
also increase absorption of certain toxic elements.

It has been postulated that this is involved in the
increased mortality rates seen in patients with very
high vitamin D levels in their blood.

Vitamin D levels over 150 nmol/L have been linked
to increased absorption of aluminum, cadmium,
cobalt, and lead, as well as radioactive isotopes
like cesium and radioactive strontium.

In children, elevated vitamin D levels during
the summer
(due to increased sunlight exposure)
are linked with a seasonal increased blood level
of lead.

It’s also important to recognize that vitamin D
does not work alone in the body. It also depends
on essential minerals like magnesium, calcium,
zinc, and iron in order to achieve its full
benefit.

Internet Business Marketing Methods

The internet is a great place for people to start the business of their dreams. Online businesses are cheaper to run than standard retail businesses because operating methods are generally low-cost, and internet businesses have very little overhead expenses.

Internet business can contain a great deal of products and information without the expense necessary for standard businesses. An internet business can be operated at home, and marketing an internet business has many low-cost options and methods not afforded to regular business owners.

Marketing methods are numerous, but not all methods of internet marketing are known to internet business owners. Low-cost internet marketing methods are available to internet business owners, and these methods are easy to implement. These low-cost marketing methods make it simple for anyone with an internet business to make that business a financial success. An internet business owner doesn't have to be a corporate giant in order to receive the internet marketing it deserves.

For internet businesses and websites to obtain the highest search engine rankings, they must receive an adequate amount of internet traffic. The more the traffic, the higher the ranking. When marketing a website and looking for low-cost methods, this seems like an unfair disadvantage. Internet business owners seeking more traffic submit their websites to search engines in order to increase traffic. If search engines won't list websites high upon their lists when traffic is low, how can internet business owners receive the traffic they need in order to gain higher search engine rankings and a chance at success? This is a marketing nightmare for those looking for low-cost marketing methods. Link exchanges are the answers to those wanting low-cost internet marketing and high search engine rankings.

Internet business owners looking for low-cost internet marketing should seriously consider becoming involved in link exchange opportunities.Exchanging links with other business websites is not just a low-cost marketing method, exchanging business links is often free. There are websites where those wishing to exchange links can find compatible link partners also interested in low-cost and free marketing through increased website traffic.

Once internet business owners are receiving the necessary website traffic in order to achieve high ranking search engine status, they should submit their internet business website to all of the major search engines. Search engine submission and marketing is low-cost and often free through search engine submission services. Website owners using these services are generally asked to place a link to the website submission service on their website. With proper keyword density and meta tags, business websites will achieve higher rankings on major search engine lists. Marketing a business website through low-cost and free online services is an effective and intelligent method of internet business promotion.

How to create content that will get you loads of links

Did you know that there is a way that you can actually create content that will help generate plenty of relevant and valuable one way links pointed at your site?

In the same way that articles can be written with the objective of getting as many readers as possible to click through the links in the resource box at the bottom of an article, you can also specifically write content with links in mind.

The accumulation of links has been made a lot easier by the rise of blogs in recent times which tends to make linking and creation of links very easy.

How Useful Is Your Article To Other Sites?
When one is looking for links, the focus changes from your prospective clients out there to fellow bloggers in more or less the same line of business. This means that you have to be familiar with blogs that are closely related to the topic or subject area of your own blog.

What kind of content would they be interested in referring their visitors to at the moment? These are the sort questions you will need to ask yourself and answer accurately before you can even begin working on a strategy to get related high-traffic sites to link to your content.

Select A Hot Topical Issue
Yet another direction to take is to select hot topical issues to write about. Especially where it is directly related to or deeply affecting the industry or topic you usually cover.
Actually the idea here is that the more passionate people are about the issue, the better.

Then you have to be careful to write about it in a different and refreshing way. If for example you can look at the whole raging debate in new light, the better. Whatever you do, just remember that you cannot afford to bore you potential audience. This brings us to the next point.

Controversy Sells, Controversy Will Get You Links
For centuries offline newspapers have known this great secret to high sales. Controversy never fails to sell newspapers. In the same way that it sells really big on the newsstands, controversy can also get you plenty of links. There are numerous examples on the net to prove this. For instance controversial pictures have had the effect of getting thousands of links pointing at them literally overnight.

Admittedly, getting a controversial photo to post at your site or a controversial topic to write about is far from being an easy task. However the huge advantage you will have from this day on is that you will know exactly what you are looking for and therefore it will be a lot easier to find it when you always keep in mind what you are looking for. Whatever you are doing, which ever site you are visiting always keep the thought at the back of your mind that you are looking for something controversial to help you win links. If you do this for any length of time, then chances are pretty high that sooner or later you will get an idea.

Get Into The Conversation
It is really all about creativity and the powerful ideas that you can generate with the sole objective of coming up with the sort of content that can help you accumulate many precious links to your site within a relatively short period of time.

However your idea creation needs to be controlled so that you concentrate on your particular niche and other closely related niches that compliment yours. To be able to so this successfully, you will need to get into the conversation going on in your niche. At any given time they will be a certain discussion through comments left in blogs and discussion groups about some issue related to the industry in general. By monitoring the comments on the major blogs and also discussion groups and forums, you will be able to even participate in this conversation. This is important since it will give you the added confidence of writing your content.

Participating in these conversations also plays another very important role. And that is, it will enable you to test your ideas before you turn them into content.

Conclusion
When you create content with links in mind, it dramatically increases your chances of accumulating them. More so when you use the tips supplied in this article.

Are You Making These 5 Common Pay-per-click Mistakes In Your Small Business?

Are You Making These 5 Common Pay-per-click Mistakes In Your Small Business?

Because of the ability to specifically target your unique prospects based on interest as well as geography, the ability to tightly control your ad spend and to precisely measure results, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) is probably the greatest breakthrough to come along in advertising since the launch of television.

And, because of those same benefits, it’s much more affordable for the small to mid-size business owner to leverage for their business (as compared with television and many other advertising alternatives).

That being said, PPC is not as easy as it seems at first glance. Business owners looking to launch their first campaign will quickly discover how easily they can spend hundreds – and even thousands – of dollars in wasted efforts while they learn to navigate the PPC waters.

While entire books have been written on the ins-and-outs of pay-per-click advertising, there are 5 common mistakes that I see business owners making when I’m asked to evaluate their pay-per-click campaign strategies.  These mistakes are easy to fix, and doing so will dramatically increase the effectiveness of your pay-per-click campaign!

The 5 most common PPC mistakes are:

   1. Using your home page as the landing page.  No matter which search engine you use for your campaign – Google, Yahoo!, MSN or any other – you can decide where to direct your new customers when they click on your ad.  The most common mistake I see business owners make when they launch their PPC campaign is directing those clicks to their home page.

The thinking seems to be that their home page is equivalent to the front door of their business, and they want their new customers to walk through – but that’s where they go wrong.  With PPC advertising, your prospect is searching for something highly specific – that’s the “keyword” they’ve entered into the search engine.  Having them land at your home page is the equivalent of having them ask you for a specific item in your store, and you telling them – “it’s in here somewhere, it’s up to you to find it.”

Obviously you wouldn’t do that in person with your customers – and you don’t want to do it online, either.  By designing what’s known as a “landing page” – the place where visitors “land” when they click on your ad - you can present your customer with exactly what they are looking for when they come to your site.  Your landing page should be tightly focused to the keywords you are using for your PPC ad, with no other links or distractions to confuse your prospect. This dramatically increases their satisfaction with your site, as well as the likelihood that they will make a purchase from you.

   2. Not customizing your landing page to your prospects’ keyword searches.  The way an ideal PPC campaign works is something like this:  a prospect enters a search term – for my business it might be “e-mail marketing.”  They are presented with my PPC ad with “e-mail marketing” in the headline AND the ad copy.  My prospect clicks on my ad and is taken to my landing page that is all about e-mail marketing.  (I will have bid on both “e-mail marketing” and “email marketing” to capture searchers entering it both ways).

The likelihood that my prospect will become a customer is high, because there is no confusion about what the page is about – no wondering if he’s in the right place or if we offer what he is looking for.  A common mistake I see business owners making with their PPC campaigns is to try to combine several products or services into one landing page.  This leads to frustration when your searcher clicks on your ad and lands on a page that they aren’t sure offers what they are specifically looking for.  Make sure your landing pages are customized to the keyword your prospect is searching for – and quickly turn prospects into customers.

   3. Using generic ad copy in your PPC ads.  The tricky thing with PPC ads is you don’t have much real estate to work with.  Google allows just 70 characters; Yahoo allows 190 characters (with spaces) in a text ad.  When every single word counts, you can’t afford to use meaningless words like “high quality service,” or “established in 1903.”  While these statements may be true about your business, they don’t target the specific searches your prospects are entering to find the products and services they are looking for.  A mistake I see clients make in their PPC ads is to include these type of generic statements that don’t set their business apart.

When you are writing your ad, you’ll want to include specific keywords that your prospects will likely enter to find what you have to offer.  Your headline must be captivating and should include your main keyword.  The next line of your ad should contain the single biggest benefit you offer to your customers.  What sets your company apart from your competitors?  That’s what goes in your PPC ad.  The 3rd line of your ad should contain a feature of your product or service or an offer – special discounted pricing or something free work well here.  By making your ad specific to the keywords that your prospects will likely enter, you’ll be well on your way not only to increasing clicks, but to turning clicks into cash as well.

   4. Not securing high enough placement with your bids.  All of the search engines use a slightly different method for determining the position for your ad.  Google and Yahoo use a combination of ad relevancy (how relevant your ad is to the keywords you’ve bid on and the landing page you present to your visitors) and bid price.  A big mistake I notice my clients making is not targeting their keywords tightly enough and specific enough to their product or service to allow them to bid high enough on those keywords to secure top placement on the search engines.

It’s estimated that 85% of all PPC clicks occur on ads that appear in one of the top 3 positions on the page.  That means, if you aren’t working hard to find keywords that are specific enough to your niche and not bidding high enough to secure a top spot, you are missing out on a good portion of the clicks that could be yours.  Use a keyword tool such as Wordtracker to research keyword possibilities that you may not have considered.

Look for a Keyword Effectiveness of 10 or greater – meaning that the keyword has sufficient search queries with the engines to result in significant traffic, without a lot of competitors bidding on the same keyword.  When you place your campaign, use these keywords and bid high enough to secure a top spot, ensuring that the people searching for what you have to offer find your website – instead of your competitors.

   5. Not testing your ads to determine their effectiveness.  While there is a “formula” for crafting an effective PPC ad, slight changes – even changing one word – can have a dramatic impact on your click-through-rate (the percentage of people who click on your ad as compared with the number who see it).  A mistake I see business owners making with their campaigns is to choose their keywords and then write only one PPC ad to display.  All of the major search engines offer the capability of creating ad variations so that you can test different ad copy to determine what works best.

This is known as “split testing” or “A/B” testing, as you are comparing the results of two different ads for the same keywords.  Google will alternate the ads for you, and you’ll easily be able to see which ad performs better by looking at your click-through-rate.  When you find an ad that outperforms another, that ad becomes your “control” – or the ad to beat.  Put the under-performing ad on “hold” and create another version, changing one or two words or possibly just the headline.  Then test that ad against your control.

This is a continual process – you are always trying to beat your control to improve your number of clicks.  Not surprisingly, advertisers who test their ads in this method are more successful with PPC, as they tend to know their customers better and are able to target their prospects with captivating ads that turn into an increasing number of clicks – and customers – for them.

Pay-per-click advertising has enormous benefits for the small to mid-size business owner.  Avoiding these 5 common mistakes will help you save money and quickly turn clicks into customers – and increased profits – when you launch your next PPC campaign.

7 Small Business Marketing Tips

Here are 7 low-cost but highly effective marketing tips to help any small business find customers and generate sales quickly.

1. Don't Advertise Like a Big Business

Big businesses advertise to create name recognition and future sales. A small business can't afford to do that. Instead, design your advertising to produce sales ...now. One way to accomplish this is to always include an offer in your advertising - and an easy way for prospective customers to respond to it.

2. Offer a Cheaper Version

Some prospective customers are not willing to pay the asking price for your product or service. Others are more interested in paying a low price than in getting the best quality. You can avoid losing sales to many of these customers by offering a smaller or stripped down version of your product or service at a lower price.

3. Offer a Premium Version

Not all customers are looking for a cheap price. Many are willing to pay a higher price to get a premium product or service. You can boost your average size sale and your total revenue by offering a more comprehensive product or service ...or by combining several products or services in a special premium package offer for a higher price.

4. Try Some Unusual Marketing Methods

Look for some unconventional marketing methods your competitors are overlooking. You may discover some highly profitable ways to generate sales and avoid competition. For example, print your best small ad on a postcard and mail it to prospects in your targeted market. A small ad on a postcard can drive a high volume of traffic to your website or generate a flood of sales leads for a very small cost.

5. Trim Your Ads

Reduce the size of your ads so you can run more ads for the same cost. You may even be surprised to find that some of your short ads generate a better response than their longer versions.

6. Set up Joint Promotions with Other Small Businesses

Contact some non-competing small businesses serving customers in your market. Offer to publicize their products or services to your customers in exchange for their publicizing your services to their customers. This usually produces a large number of sales for a very low cost.

7. Take Advantage of Your Customers

Your customers already know and trust you. It's easier to get more business from them than to get any business from somebody who never bought from you. Take advantage of this by creating some special deals just for your existing customers ...and announce new products and services to them before you announce them to the general market.

Also, convert your customers into publicity agents for your business. Develop an incentive for them to tell associates and friends about the value of your products or services. An endorsement from them is more effective than any amount of advertising - and it is much cheaper.

Each of these 7 marketing tips provides a simple, low-cost way for any small business to find customers and generate sales quickly.
